Strategic Framework

Mosaic catalyzes a bigger, more inclusive, and more powerful environmental movement to achieve durable progress across climate, conservation, and environmental health and justice.

The gaps in the environmental movement are well known. While we have significant assets and potential to advance large-scale change, our 30K+ organizations are fragmented by issue silos, structural inequities that sideline key voices, and uneven distribution of skills and resources.

Mosaic addresses this gap by investing pooled philanthropic funds to bolster four pillars of cross-movement infrastructure: narrative, connection & trust, leadership, and advocacy tools & training.

Mosaic also catalyzes the field by:

  • Connecting and developing diverse, representative movement leaders;
  • Synthesizing and disseminating data and insights about movement-wide needs and opportunities; and
  • Modeling collaborative, cross-movement governance.

Background
Mosaic is a learning organization deeply committed to ongoing evaluation and adaptation to make sure we’re meeting the needs of U.S.-based movements to protect the environment -- including conservation, climate, and environmental health and justice -- and amplifying the impact of philanthropy field-wide. In 2023, we took a look back at our first three years of governance and grantmaking to see where we could improve. We drew powerful insights from interviews with grantees, members of our governing body and staff, leading academics, and our funder community. We also analyzed data from grant reports, field surveys, research publications, and media. This process led us to adjust our participatory practices to make them more efficient and less burdensome, and sharpen our strategies to ensure we’re investing in the highest-impact areas for movement success. The strategic framework and implementation plan, adopted by the Mosaic Leadership Council, were supported by learning and evaluation consultant Rhonda Schlangen, Onside Partners, and The Bridgespan Group.
